What is Dalgona Coffee Recipe
Dalgona Coffee Recipe is a whipped coffee drink made by beating equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water until the mixture becomes light, thick and creamy. You spoon the whipped coffee over milk and stir before drinking.
The name comes from dalgona, a Korean sugar candy with a light caramel-like flavor and appearance. The coffee drink became widely popular because it looks impressive but uses very basic ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1 cup milk
- Ice cubes, optional, for iced Dalgona coffee
Instructions
1. Make the coffee mixture: Add instant coffee, sugar and hot water to a medium bowl.
2. Whip the coffee: Use a hand mixer or whisk to beat the mixture until it becomes thick, pale and fluffy. This can take about 3 to 5 minutes with an electric mixer and longer by hand.
3. Prepare the milk: Pour cold milk over ice for an iced drink. For hot Dalgona coffee, warm the milk and pour it into a cup.
4. Add the whipped coffee: Spoon the fluffy coffee mixture over the milk.
5. Serve: Serve right away. Stir the whipped coffee into the milk before drinking for a smooth coffee flavor.
Essential Note
- Use instant coffee, not brewed coffee or regular ground coffee. Instant coffee contains the right soluble coffee solids to create a stable whipped foam.
- The water should be hot, but you do not need a large amount. Too much water can make the coffee mixture thin and difficult to whip. Equal amounts of instant coffee, sugar and hot water give you a thick, creamy topping.
- Sugar also helps stabilize the whipped coffee. If you reduce the sugar too much, the foam may not hold its shape as well.
- An electric hand mixer gives the fastest result. A regular whisk works too, but it takes more time and effort. Keep whipping until the coffee becomes thick enough to hold soft peaks.
- For iced Dalgona coffee, use a tall glass filled with ice and cold milk. For hot Dalgona coffee, warm the milk gently and avoid boiling it. Add the whipped coffee after preparing the milk so the topping stays light.
Recipe Notes
For a creamy Dalgona Coffee Recipe, use equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water, then serve the fluffy coffee over cold or warm milk.
Cooking Tips and Tricks
- Use fresh instant coffee for a stronger and better flavor. A medium or deep bowl gives you enough room to whip without making a mess.
- If you whisk by hand, use a fast circular motion and keep going until the mixture becomes thick and fluffy. An electric hand mixer can save several minutes.
- Do not add too much water. A thin coffee mixture will take longer to whip and may not become fluffy. If the foam looks too soft, continue whipping for another minute.
- For a richer drink, use whole milk. You can also use oat, almond or soy milk if you prefer a dairy-free option.
- Serve the coffee soon after whipping because the foam slowly loses volume over time. Stir the topping into the milk before drinking to balance the strong coffee flavor.
