Chocolate Banana Oatmeal is a warm, creamy breakfast that combines ripe banana, oats and cocoa powder in one easy bowl. The banana adds natural sweetness, while cocoa gives the oatmeal a rich chocolate taste without making it too heavy. It takes about 10 minutes to prepare, so it works well on busy mornings. I like to make this oatmeal when I want something filling but still simple. A few toppings, such as sliced banana, nuts or chocolate chips, can make each bowl feel special. The best part is that you can adjust the sweetness and texture to match your taste.

What is Chocolate Banana Oatmeal
Chocolate Banana Oatmeal is a creamy oatmeal recipe made with rolled oats, banana, cocoa powder and milk. The ingredients cook together until the oats become soft and thick.
A ripe banana works best because it gives the oatmeal a naturally sweet flavor. Cocoa powder adds a deep chocolate taste and pairs very well with banana.
You can serve it warm with fresh fruit, peanut butter, chopped nuts or a few chocolate chips. It makes a quick breakfast that can keep you satisfied through the morning.
Ingredients
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey, optional
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 small pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter, optional
For topping:
- Sliced banana
- Chopped walnuts or almonds
- 1 teaspoon peanut butter
- A few dark chocolate chips
- A light sprinkle of cocoa powder
Instructions
Step 1: Mash the banana: Peel the banana and mash it well with a fork. Leave a few small pieces if you like some banana texture.
Step 2: Combine the ingredients: Add oats, milk, mashed banana, cocoa powder, cinnamon and salt to a small saucepan. Stir well.
Step 3: Cook the oatmeal: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until the oats become soft and creamy.
Step 4: Add flavor: Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in vanilla extract and maple syrup or honey if you want more sweetness.
Step 5: Serve: Transfer the oatmeal to a bowl. Add sliced banana, peanut butter, nuts or chocolate chips. Serve warm.
Essential Note
Use a ripe or very ripe banana for the best flavor and natural sweetness. If your banana has many brown spots, it usually works very well in oatmeal. Less-ripe bananas taste less sweet, so you may need extra maple syrup or honey.
Cook the oats over medium heat and stir often. This helps prevent the milk and oats from sticking to the bottom of the pan. If the oatmeal becomes too thick, add a small splash of warm milk and stir until you reach the texture you want.
For thicker oatmeal, reduce the milk slightly. For a softer and creamier bowl, add a little more milk during cooking. Do not cook the oatmeal at very high heat because the milk can scorch before the oats become tender.
Use unsweetened cocoa powder if you want a stronger chocolate flavor without adding much sweetness. Cocoa powder can taste slightly bitter, so the ripe banana helps balance it.
If you use quick oats instead of old-fashioned rolled oats, reduce the cooking time because they soften faster. Steel-cut oats need a different cooking method and much more time, so they are not a direct substitute in this recipe.
You can also make this recipe dairy-free by using almond milk, oat milk, soy milk or another plant-based milk. For a richer bowl, stir in peanut butter near the end of cooking.
Recipe Notes
For the creamiest Chocolate Banana Oatmeal, use a ripe banana, unsweetened cocoa powder and rolled oats, then adjust the milk to create your preferred texture.
Cooking Tips and Tricks
Use a ripe banana because it gives the oatmeal more sweetness and a stronger banana flavor. Mash it before cooking so it mixes evenly with the oats.
Keep the heat at medium and stir every 30 to 60 seconds. This keeps the oatmeal smooth and helps stop it from sticking to the pan.
Add cocoa powder while the oats cook so it blends well with the milk. If you prefer a sweeter chocolate oatmeal, add maple syrup after cooking and taste before adding more.
For extra creaminess, stir in a spoonful of peanut butter at the end. Let the oatmeal sit for 1 minute before serving because it will thicken as it cools.
Fresh banana slices, nuts and dark chocolate chips make simple toppings that add extra flavor and texture.
