Please read our Privacy & Disclosure Policy disclosure policy.
Baked Ziti is a warm, cheesy pasta dish that turns simple ingredients into a filling family meal. It combines tender ziti pasta, rich tomato sauce, creamy ricotta, melted mozzarella, and savory Parmesan. The pasta gets mixed with sauce and cheese, then baked until the top is golden and bubbly. It is a great choice for busy weeknights, family dinners, or casual gatherings. You can prepare it ahead and bake it when you are ready to eat. One of the best things about Baked Ziti is how easy it is to change. Add ground beef, Italian sausage, spinach, or extra vegetables to match your taste.

What is Baked Ziti
Baked Ziti is an Italian-American pasta casserole made with ziti, tomato sauce, and several kinds of cheese. The pasta cooks first, then gets layered or mixed with sauce and cheese before baking.
The oven brings everything together. The edges become slightly crisp, while the center stays soft, creamy, and saucy.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ziti pasta
- 24 ounces marinara sauce
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Heat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375 F. Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with olive oil.
- Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti until just shy of al dente. Drain it well.
- Make the cheese mixture: In a bowl, mix ricotta, egg, Parmesan, garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley.
- Mix the pasta: Add the cooked ziti to a large bowl. Stir in about two-thirds of the marinara sauce and half of the mozzarella.
- Build the casserole: Spread a little sauce in the baking dish. Add half of the pasta, followed by spoonfuls of the ricotta mixture. Add the remaining pasta and sauce.
- Add cheese: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan over the top.
- Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese melts and turns lightly golden.
- Rest and serve: Let the Baked Ziti rest for 10 minutes before serving. Add fresh parsley on top if desired.
Essential Note
Do not overcook the ziti before baking. The pasta continues to cook in the oven, so slightly firm pasta gives the best texture.
Use enough sauce to coat the pasta well. Dry pasta can become hard around the edges during baking. If your marinara sauce tastes acidic, add a small pinch of sugar to balance it.
For a meat version, brown 1 pound of ground beef or Italian sausage, drain excess fat, and mix it with the marinara sauce. You can also add cooked spinach, mushrooms, zucchini, or bell peppers.
Covering the dish for the first part of baking keeps the pasta moist. Removing the foil near the end helps the cheese brown.
Letting the casserole rest before cutting is important. It gives the cheese and sauce time to settle, so each serving holds together better.
Recipe Notes
For the best Baked Ziti, cook the pasta slightly firm, use plenty of sauce, layer the cheeses well, and let the casserole rest before serving.
Cooking Tips and Tricks
Cook the ziti 1 to 2 minutes less than the package directions because it will finish cooking in the oven. Salt the pasta water well so the noodles have more flavor.
Use whole-milk ricotta for a richer and creamier filling. Freshly shredded mozzarella usually melts better than pre-shredded cheese.
Do not skip the sauce between pasta layers. It helps prevent dry edges and keeps every bite moist.
For extra flavor, add cooked Italian sausage, ground beef, or sautéed vegetables. You can also add red pepper flakes for a little heat.
Cover the dish while it starts baking, then remove the foil to brown the cheese. Let the finished casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
